Smoke Detector GIF Viewed 10 Million Times

It’s wild that a Smoke Detector GIF I created was viewed 10 million times. Although I envisioned some rapid growth in the future I didn’t think it would occur so quickly.

Savvy Turtle and I created our GIPHY accounts at the beginning of 2022. It’s been over two years now and we’ve garnered over 110 million views collectively. We created our accounts to provide a stronger brand identity coupled with a personal response. Most of our GIFs uploaded to GIPHY are comedic and a few are heartfelt or serious. And they are for all to enjoy.

Home Fire Statistics

The smoke detector GIF was a comedic approach to a serious topic, which is house fires and fires in general. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, “over 2,200 people die each year due to unintentional home fires”. Fire departments spread awareness in many states by educating our youth in our schools. One of the important factors is to have a working smoke detector with fresh batteries. And this GIF highlights just that.

Close to Home

Our father was a police officer for the Paulsboro Police Department in Paulsboro, NJ. I remember there was a house fire and a family’s young daughter perished in it. The vigil we had for her when I was in grade school at Saint John’s Catholic School in Paulsboro remains a core memory. I don’t remember if he told us immediately then as it was over 40 years ago and we were all very young. But, I do remember him telling us about it later. It was a tough moment for him. Fire safety has always been a concern for our family.

Humor Cloaks an Important Message

Humor has always been a part of our lives. And oftentimes, humor includes uncomfortable truths. I’m sure you had the pesky smoke detector beeping in your home. And now with livestreaming and recorded videos inevitably you have heard the formidable CHIRP in the background.

Such was the case with a friend’s video she posted that had the all-too-familiar CHIRP from a smoke detector. I had already created an influencer video for 9V Duracell Batteries centered around replacing the batteries in your smoke detector years ago. So, once I heard the chirp in her video I jumped into action and created this little animation within Adobe Premiere Pro. Never had I thought that this would achieve 10 million views within 4 months of uploading it to GIPHY on March 31, 2024.

I’d like to think that this humorous approach to a safety issue brings awareness.

Instagram is Fun with GIPHYs

GIPHY is fully integrated into Instagram. It makes for a fun way to interact with others. It can be used to troll others but I rarely do that as it is not in my nature. I try to use my GIPHYs as a response over text. In really serious matters I’ll type a message. In a few cases, I’ll include text as a reply to my GIPHY or use the GIPHY as a reply to my text.

How to Use Our GIFs within Instagram

To use our GIFs within Instagram, open a post or reel and click on the comment icon. You’ll see GIFs as an option. This is the portal to GIPHY. Enter relevant keywords, such as “udoit smokedetector”. When the desired GIF appears, click on it, and that GIF will be entered into your comment.

You can also use a GIF within a reply but it is a little tricky. In this case, click on the reply and backspace over the name. Once you do that the icon will appear on the right. Click on that icon and you’ll see the GIFs tab appear. Enter the relevant keywords as described above and click on your desired GIF.

Thank You GIPHY

You’ve certainly put effort into buying a sympathetic or congratulatory card in the store for a loved one. The same can be achieved with a GIPHY search at your fingertips within seconds. As of July 19, 2024, we currently have 319 GIFs uploaded to GIPHY to give you an additional option for expressing your emotions graphically. I want to take this opportunity to thank GIPHY for providing an incredible platform for expressing emotion with a personal touch.
