In this UDoIt Reviews video, I review the Bon Augure Rustic Oak Bookshelf. This is a very stylish rustic piece with a subtle modern touch. The manufacturer sent this to U Do It™️ for review.
But Why a Bookshelf?
You may ask “Why would a DIYer review a bookshelf?”
UDoIt is a lifestyle brand with many facets including clothing design, interior decoration, and more. UDoIt takes an idea to paper and completes the build with style in mind. However, the word completes is highly exaggerated because there are several unfinished projects. The struggle is real.
Demonstration
Please note that my notes here along with the video are a demonstration and are not a replacement of the BON AUGURE instructions. It is up to you to follow the manufacturer’s instructions accordingly and follow all safety procedures. If you do not feel comfortable with any part of this assembly, please seek the help of someone who can assist you.
Packaging
Please note that the package is moderately heavy and you may need assistance.
The packaging was well thought out for minimum footprint while ensuring product integrity during shipping.
I was pleased to see the hardware and instructions were in a plastic zipper bag secured with ribbon to the box. Sometimes, the hardware is lost in transit and it was apparent this was considered.
Instructions
The instructions supplied illustrated the parts and tools required. Please read through the instructions entirely before assembly.
The steps were annotated with illustrations so they were easily understandable.
I have an important comment that I will mention later in the assembly of the cross beams so look for that when you get to that section.
What’s Included
Unbox all of the parts including the user manual and you should find the following items along with other items.
- (2) Uprights
- (4) Shelves
- Hardware including screws, nuts, bolts
- Wall anchoring for safety
- Instruction manual
- A Phillips screwdriver
- An Allen key (hex key)
- A wrench
Assembly
If you have someone to help you with the assembly then maybe it will go faster. I say maybe because if my sister were to help me we would be laughing so much that we wouldn’t be able to finish assembly.
If you follow the directions step by step along with the illustrations you’ll notice that they are written and illustrated well.
Levelers
The levelers are installed at the feet of the two uprights. Install these and try to set the height by eye at first. You may need to adjust these once the shelf is installed.
Crossbraces
During assembly of the cross-braces please follow the directions. This is very important because the cross-braces ensure the shelf’s stability and also allow you to secure the shelf to the wall. You may notice on the manual that the two holes appear to be towards the top of the shelf.
Attach Crossbraces to Uprights
Once you assemble the cross-braces you’ll attach them to the shelf according to the directions. This is where having a helper to hold the uprights in place will help. But, as you see I was able to complete this task alone.
Installation of Shelves
This is another crucial step that must be followed correctly. Do not overtighten the screws as you attach them to the bottoms of the shelves’ threaded inserts. You have to decide what is good enough for torque. But, please understand that it is possible to bend the metal on the uprights. If you bend the metal on the uprights you compromise the integrity of the shelf unit itself once fully assembled.
Finding a Home
It is recommended that you use a level laying flat on a shelf to show the horizontal level along the width (left to right) and depth level of the shelf (front to back) while positioning it. Adjust the levelers accordingly but be aware that the shelf can tip over during this step. It is best that you have someone to assist you.
Anchor to Wall
Follow the steps in the instructions to anchor to the wall. I cannot guide you here as there are a lot of unknowns with this. You may have wiring, plumbing, or other utility behind the wall that you could pierce. If you are uncomfortable with this please consult a contractor or handyman to assist you. A lot can go wrong during this step. It is up to you to follow all safety procedures.
